Crafting the Monstrous in Fiction: with Isabel Grey
I call upon you to investigate your nature as I have been compelled to confront mine. Heed my words, and you may well
discover the seams and sutures in yourself. - Susan Stryker
Throughout literary eras, monsters have embodied societal fears and represented the Other. They are, however, often deeply misunderstood creatures. Not truly monsters but something or someone made monstrous. This concept is the foundation of this course. Students will come face to face with their imagination & monsters while examining examples from masters, challenging harmful historical discourse, contextualizing effective craft techniques, and constructing complex character studies. We will compose several scenes casting our monsters, but instead of running away in fear, we will confront our creations. What is your monster trying to say? Are you brave enough to listen?
