Matthew Meloney
(he/him)
Instructor: Drums.
Matthew has been a musician since he first picked up the violin in fourth grade. He studied classical music throughout grade school, later transitioning to upright and electric bass in the seventh grade and joining choir in high school. This formal training provided a strong foundation in classical music, theory, and ensemble performance.
Through school and extracurricular programs, Matthew toured Northern France with the Napa High School Chamber Choir, performing in cathedrals including Notre Dame and Abbey Mont-Saint-Michel. He also traveled to New York City with the Napa Valley Youth Symphony to perform at Carnegie Hall. It was in sixth grade, however, that he first picked up a pair of drumsticks.
Outside of academia, Matthew has been playing in bands since age 11. Largely self-taught on the drum set, his early influences include Matt Tong (Bloc Party), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan (Avenged Sevenfold), and Dave Grohl (Nirvana). He gained extensive gigging experience from a young age throughout Northern California.
After moving to Lyons, Colorado in 2017, Matthew began collaborating with local artists, releasing albums and performing across the state. While his early drumming focused on indie/alternative rock and metal, he has since expanded into reggae (Stylie), folk/Americana (The Curtis Brothers Band), and pop, funk, and jazz (Diamond Empire Band). He actively seeks out new musical challenges and is currently studying improvisation under JP Bouvet while continuing to perform with a variety of projects. Matthew is excited to continue making music a central part of his life and looks forward to sharing that passion with his students through teaching and mentorship.
